Nijō Castle

二条城

Nakagyo, Kyoto · 京都

The Tokugawa residence in Kyoto, where the shogunate was formally handed back to the emperor in 1867. Its corridors are laid with nightingale floors that chirp under any weight.

Why it’s worth it

You cannot cross those floors silently, and that was the security system. The painted screens in the audience halls are originals rotated from storage.
