Nishiki Tenmangū
錦天満宮
Nakagyo, Kyoto · 京都
A small lantern-hung shrine closing the east end of Nishiki Market, whose stone torii famously has both ends buried inside neighbouring buildings.
Why it’s worth it
The torii was built before the buildings and nobody moved it — the ends genuinely disappear into two shops. Best small joke in Kyoto.
