Asagaya, Tokyo · 東京
A classic shōtengai — the covered local high street that used to be everywhere — running from Asagaya station, with two hundred family-run shops.
Why it’s worth it
In August it hangs enormous handmade papier-mâché figures for Tanabata, and the whole arcade becomes an amateur sculpture show. Rain never touches you.
