Enoshima Shrine

江島神社

Enoshima, Kamakura · 鎌倉

Three linked shrines up the spine of Enoshima, dedicated to Benzaiten, one of them holding a rare 8th-century naked statue of her in a small octagonal hall.

Why it’s worth it

It is a genuine climb — take the paid escalator up and walk down. The dragon legend attached to the island is told on boards along the way.
