Kōtoku-in Great Buddha
高徳院 鎌倉大仏
Hase, Kamakura · 鎌倉
An 11-metre bronze Amida cast in 1252, originally housed in a wooden hall that was destroyed by storms and a tidal wave in the 15th century and never rebuilt.
Why it’s worth it
You can go inside it — a small door in the back leads into the hollow bronze shell, where the casting seams are visible from within.
