伏見稲荷大社

Fushimi, Kyoto · 京都

A shrine at the foot of Inari-san with paths of donated vermilion torii running four kilometres up the mountain, past hundreds of smaller altars.

Why it’s worth it

Almost everyone turns back at the first viewpoint. Keep going and within twenty minutes the crowd is gone entirely. Arrive before seven and the lower gates are empty too.
