Sanjūsangen-dō
三十三間堂
Higashiyama, Kyoto · 京都
A 120-metre wooden hall from 1266 containing 1,001 life-size Kannon figures in ranked rows, plus twenty-eight guardian deities carved in the Kamakura period.
Why it’s worth it
Photography is banned inside, which is why it works — you have to actually stand there. Walking the full length of that hall is unlike anything else in Japan.
