Tō-ji
東寺
Minami, Kyoto · 京都
A temple from 796 whose five-storey pagoda, 55 metres tall, is the tallest wooden structure in the country. On the 21st of each month the grounds fill with a thousand stalls.
Why it’s worth it
Come on the 21st. The Kōbō-san market is the best antique, kimono and junk hunt in Kyoto, held in the shadow of the pagoda since the 1200s.
