Founded in 1253 as the country’s first purpose-built Zen monastery, with 750-year-old junipers grown from seed brought from China, and a hillside shrine behind it.

Why it’s worth it

The Ten-en hiking trail starts at the top of the temple steps and runs an hour and a half through the hills to Zuisen-ji. Best walk in Kamakura.
