Koishikawa Kōrakuen

小石川後楽園

Bunkyo, Tokyo · 東京

Begun in 1629, laid out with miniature versions of Chinese and Japanese landscapes — a full moon bridge, a rice paddy, a stretch of Kyoto’s Ōi river.

Why it’s worth it

The collision is the point: a four-hundred-year-old landscape with the Tokyo Dome roof rising over the trees. Nowhere states the city’s layering more plainly.
