Jōjakkō-ji
常寂光寺
Arashiyama, Kyoto · 京都
A small temple climbing the Ogura hillside above Arashiyama, with a thatched Niōmon gate, a two-storey pagoda and a view over the Kyoto basin from the top.
Why it’s worth it
It is ten minutes uphill from the bamboo grove and holds a fraction of the people. In November it is arguably better than anything in Higashiyama.
