Kōdai-ji

高台寺

Higashiyama, Kyoto · 京都

Founded in 1606 by Hideyoshi’s widow, with a lacquered mausoleum, two teahouses attributed to Sen no Rikyū, and a small bamboo grove at the back of the garden.

Why it’s worth it

The spring and autumn night illuminations are the best in Higashiyama and far less crowded than Kiyomizu. The bamboo path is empty at almost any hour.
