Yasaka Kōshin-dō
八坂庚申堂
Higashiyama, Kyoto · 京都
A small temple whose courtyard is covered in kukurizaru — bundles of coloured cloth, each one a wish, granted only if you give up a desire in exchange.
Why it’s worth it
Two minutes off Ninenzaka and one of the most photographed small courtyards in Japan. Write one properly; the trade is the point of the object.
