興福寺

Nara Park, Nara · 奈良

The Fujiwara clan temple, whose 50-metre pagoda is Nara’s skyline and whose treasure house holds the three-faced Ashura statue from 734.

Why it’s worth it

The Ashura is one of the most famous sculptures in Japan and looks about sixteen years old. It alone justifies the treasure-house ticket.
