Nara Park, Nara · 奈良
A museum in the park given over almost entirely to Buddhist art, with a permanent sculpture hall and, each autumn, the annual airing of the Shōsōin treasures.
Why it’s worth it
The sculpture hall is lit so the figures read in the round. If you are here in late October, the Shōsōin exhibition shows 8th-century objects that leave storage once a year.
