Meiji Jingū
明治神宮
Harajuku, Tokyo · 東京
A shrine set inside a wood of 120,000 donated trees, planted in the 1920s on what was open ground and left to grow into something that behaves like ancient forest.
Why it’s worth it
The approach is a kilometre of gravel under closed canopy, and the temperature genuinely drops. On a Sunday morning you will often cross a Shinto wedding procession.
