A vermilion temple complex founded in 628, rebuilt after the war, and busy from first light until well after dark. The great lantern at Kaminarimon is the photograph everyone takes.

Why it’s worth it

Come at 6am and you get the whole approach to yourself, with the shutters still down on Nakamise and the incense already lit. By eleven it is a river of people.
