Daitoku-ji Sub-temples

大徳寺

Kita, Kyoto · 京都

A monastery town within Kyoto, gravel lanes running between twenty-two sub-temples, four of which keep their gardens open — Daisen-in and Kōtō-in especially.

Why it’s worth it

The tea masters worked here, and it shows in the gardens. Almost nobody comes, so you can usually sit alone in a five-hundred-year-old room.
