Kamigamo Shrine
上賀茂神社
Kita, Kyoto · 京都
Kyoto’s oldest shrine, founded before the capital moved here, with a wide gravel forecourt and two conical sand mounds standing in front of the hall.
Why it’s worth it
The cones are the origin of the purifying salt piles you see outside restaurants. The stream running through the precinct is where the priests still wash.
