Eikan-dō Zenrin-ji
永観堂禅林寺
Higashiyama, Kyoto · 京都
A hillside temple at the north end of the Philosopher’s Path, with three thousand maples, a pond, and a pagoda reached by a covered stairway.
Why it’s worth it
For two weeks in late November this is the most beautiful place in the city, and everyone knows it. Come at opening or come for the evening illumination.
