法然院

Higashiyama, Kyoto · 京都

A small temple set back in the trees just off the Philosopher's Path, entered through a moss-covered thatched gate between two raked sand mounds that are re-formed by hand.

Why it’s worth it

Three minutes from one of Kyoto's busiest walking routes and consistently empty. The grounds are free and the main hall is only open a few days a year — the gate and the moss are the reason to come.
