Nanzen-ji Aqueduct

南禅寺水路閣

Higashiyama, Kyoto · 京都

An 1890 red-brick aqueduct carrying canal water from Lake Biwa, built straight through the grounds of Nanzen-ji and now completely absorbed by them.

Why it’s worth it

The arches are free to walk under and endlessly filmed. Climb the path beside them to see the water still running along the top.
