Osaka Tenmangū
大阪天満宮
Tenma, Osaka · 大阪
A shrine to the deity of learning, founded in 949, and the organising centre of Tenjin Matsuri — a July festival of boat processions and fireworks on the river.
Why it’s worth it
On 24–25 July a hundred boats go up the Ōkawa with fires on them. The rest of the year it is a quiet forecourt at the end of the longest arcade in Japan.
