Ryōgoku Kokugikan
両国国技館
Ryogoku, Tokyo · 東京
Tokyo’s sumo arena, host of three of the six annual tournaments. In tournament weeks the wrestlers walk to work through the neighbourhood in yukata and sandals.
Why it’s worth it
Even with no tournament on, Ryōgoku is worth the stop: the stable-run chanko restaurants serve the wrestlers’ stew, and the handprints outside the station are life-size.
